C-Section Scar Treatment

C-section scar treatment is a therapeutic approach that addresses scar tissue formed during cesarean delivery. Treatment works with the visible scar and deeper fascial layers to help restore mobility and function to the abdominal area.

Potential Benefits of C-Section Scar Treatment

Professional c-section scar treatment may offer benefits for postpartum recovery, which can include:

  • Improved mobility and flexibility in the abdominal area

  • Reduced numbness or sensitivity around the scar site

  • Improved scar appearance, including reduced thickness and redness

  • Support for core strength and activation

  • Improved tissue mobility in the pelvic region

Individual results vary based on factors including healing response, time since surgery, and adherence to treatment recommendations.

When Can You Start C-Section Scar Treatment?

The timing for c-section scar treatment depends on your healing progress:

Immediate Post-Surgery (Day 1+): You can begin gentle whole-body stretches such as walking and belly breathing immediately, as tolerated according to your pain management plan. Many women also find wearing an abdominal binder (compression wrap) helpful. Avoid low waisted underwear that may place focused pressure on your surgical area.

Direct Scar Treatment (after 6-8 weeks+): Treatment of the scar tissue itself can start after you've been cleared by your healthcare provider, typically around the 6-week mark. If you've experienced an infection, this may be delayed until 8 weeks or longer.

Understanding C-Section Scar Layers

C-section scar assessment evaluates three distinct layers:

  • The superficial scar - the visible scar on your skin

  • The deeper myofascial layer - located approximately 2 centimeters above the superficial scar, beneath the skin layer

  • The linea alba incision - the central vertical incision where abdominal muscles connect

Each layer can heal differently for each person and may require individualized treatment approaches.

What Does C-Section Scar Treatment Involve?

Comprehensive Assessment

Your treatment begins with a thorough evaluation including:

  • Scar appearance assessment in both standing and lying positions

  • Movement screening to identify restrictions

  • Core assessment including evaluation for diastasis recti (abdominal separation) and breath patterns

  • Symptom evaluation

After your assessment, treatment options will be recommended and discussed.

Treatment Approaches

I use evidence-informed manual therapy techniques including:

Manual Techniques:

  • Fascial release of soft tissue layers

  • Direct scar tissue mobilization

  • Nerve mobilization techniques to avoid entrapment of vital nerves in the surgical region.

  • Manual therapy to support trunk alignment and core healing

Additional Treatment Options:

When clinically indicated, I am trained and licensed to incorporate complementary approaches including:

  • Cupping therapy for fascial release

  • Gua sha techniques for tissue mobility

  • Pelvic floor manual therapy

  • Acupuncture/dry needling for deeper tissue layers

  • Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS) - an emerging therapy when used in combination with manual techniques. MPS involves applying low-level direct current to specific points. I have training in MPS through educational materials and clinical experience. When I recommend MPS as part of your treatment, I provide detailed information about current evidence, my training, and how it complements conventional manual therapy. Read more about MPS here.

  • Myofascial Release™

  • Postpartum Corrective Exercise (PCES)

  • Clinical Pilates
